PLAYSAFE SURFACING FOOT TRACK 100 – POLYURETHANE RUNNING TRACK SYSTEM

Description

A resilient, water permeable, full depth color, synthetic rubber track surfacing comprised of polyurethane binder and color EPDM rubber granules installed over a suitable asphalt base at a compacted thickness of one-half inch (1/2”).

Materials

Base Mat
The rubber granules for the black paved base mat shall be recycled SBR rubber, processed and chopped to 1-3 mm in size, containing less than 4% dust.

EPDM Rubber
Colored EPDM man-made rubber granules shall be processed, chopped to 1-3 mm in size containing less than 4% dust, peroxide cured, containing a minimum of 20% EPDM and have a density of 1.5+ to -0.05.

Prime Coat
Primer shall be a one-component MDI based polyurethane specifically formulated for adhesion to asphalt concrete bases.

Polyurethane Binder
Binder is a one component, solvent free polyurethane binder, specifically formulated for mixing with EPDM rubber granules. Line Paints Paint for the lane lines and event markings shall be a two-component polyurethane paint compatible with the track surface.

Line Paints
Paint for the lane lines and event markings shall be a two-component polyurethane paint compatible with the track surface.

Surface Installation/Application

Allow asphalt base to cure a minimum of 14 days.

Primer

Apply the polyurethane primer over the entire area to be surfaced at a rate of 0.28 pounds per square yard using an airless spray machine. Allow 20 – 30 minutes for the solvent in the primer to evaporate before starting installation.

The colored EPDM rubber granules and polyurethane binding agent are blended together in a suitable mechanical mixer for a period of 1 – 2 minutes to insure proper coating of all rubber granules with the binder. The blended materials are then spread onto the asphalt base by means of a mechanical tandem leveler. The tandem leveler shall have a heated oscillation screed bar to obtain both smoothness and compaction. The heated screed bar normally works at a temperature of 158 – 176 degrees F. The laying procedure shall be bay to bay and limit the length of the passes so as not to have any cold joints between the bays. At the beginning of watch day, the traverse joint from the previous day shall be tack coated with binder to insure a good bond. The surface hardens through the reaction of the binder with humidity. Usually the surface can be walked upon the next day. The mat shall be installed at a compacted thickness of one-half inch (1/2”)

Striping

Painted lines and event markings shall be performed in conformance with the governing Track & Field regulations and shall include all lines and graphics required or directed by the owner. Compatible line paint in the desired colors shall be applied by means of an approved line striping machine capable of producing neat lines with sharp edges.

Guarantee

The contractor shall provide a written guarantee covering all workmanship and materials for a period of (5) five years from the date of final acceptance.
